October 30, 1935, Boeing Model 299 Flying Fortress, NX13372, took off on its initial run. It crashed right after takeoff, stalling first. Three of the men on board escaped the crash. It was later discovered that going through a checklist before takeoff would have prevented the crash. In this instance, the flight crew had forgotten to release the flight control gust locks.
Due to this accident, the pre-flight checklist was developed and used by all planes before taking off, whether private, military, or commercial.
